Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that evaluates, diagnoses, and treats biomechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Specifically, chiropractors focus on the function and alignment of the spine, due to its direct impact on the nervous system.
The spine is made up of 24 moveable bones or vertebrae. A problem can occur if one of these bones is twisted out of place, creating a misalignment or spinal “subluxation.” Trauma, such as a whiplash injury, or a slip or fall, impacts the spine. Things such as sports injuries, bad posture over a prolonged period, or repetitive injuries can also cause spinal misalignments. A misalignment can result in a “pinched” or irritated spinal nerve, as the nerves exit the spinal column between each of the vertebrae.
Pinched nerves can cause many symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, muscular weakness, restricted spinal mobility, and muscular tightness or spasms. Chiropractors are uniquely qualified to nonsurgically decompress spinal nerves by means of a specific chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractors restore normal alignment and function of the spine; restoring proper motion and decompressing nerves, allowing them to heal. Symptoms improve as tissues heal and function normally.
Chiropractic can benefit most people. Certainly, people with nerve compression problems such as those suffering with back or neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, disc degeneration or herniation, and sciatica are good candidates for chiropractic care and treatment. Others with no obvious pain look to Chiropractic for wellness, as proper spinal function optimizes functioning of the nervous system, which promotes overall health and vitality. Athletes look to Chiropractic to reap the benefits of improved strength, flexibility and performance from optimal biomechanics that Chiropractic can provide. Women who are pregnant frequently get relief from the back pain and sciatica they may experience from rapid weight gain, as well as pressure from the altered biomechanics of the back and pelvis. Chiropractic is a perfect fit for these women as it allows them to avoid taking any pain medications for relief that may be harmful to the baby. We have a special table that allows us to safely and gently adjust pregnant women so there is no pressure on the abdomen, and we avoid x-rays during pregnancy.
